Blog Carnival to Support World AIDS Day 12-1-08
HIV/AIDS has dealt a staggering blow to individual, families, communities and cultures over the last 27 years. The cost is human life, human suffering, productivity and creativity has been traumatic. World AIDS day started in 1988 as a means of increasing awareness, education, treatment and funding, changing policy and sharing grief.
The theme of 2008 World AIDS day is leadership and applies to individuals, organizations and countries. I have taken a individual leadership pledge to start a blog carnival in support of Bloggers Unite for AIDS. We have come a long ways but there is still so much to be done. 27 years is a long time and most of us have been touched by this disease in some way or another. I have lost more people to this disease than I can count. When I worked as an HIV/AIDS case manager, I used to sew hearts on a jacket when someone died. But when one of my clients made his own heart to be sewn on the jacket, it was too hard to keep personally counting the hearts stilled by this disease. I have watched too many men, women and children suffer and die This disease has had profound impact on me as a nurse, educator, case manager, therapist and friend. I know that I am not alone in my scars, joys, hopes and frustrations in regards to this disease. Please join me in the blogging community to share your own.
World AIDS Day Blog Carnival
The blog carnival is open now and you can submit your article at the Blog Carnival
The carnival is accepting articles and art in the following categories:
- Personal stories
- Professional stories
- Political views
- Philosophical views
- Art work
- General
I will publish a preliminary Carnival on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2008. I realize that some of you may be inspired by the events of the day and may not post until World AIDS Day. I will leave the blog carnival submission process open until December 2 and post a final version of the carnival on December 3rd.
Rules: HIV/AIDS has impacted us on many levels and often elicits a strong emotional response. Expressing frustrations in the carnival is expected. Hate, profanity and rudeness will not be tolerated. We may not all agree, but all opinions need to be expressed respectfully.
I am currently working to gather prizes for submissions. I know that is not standard for a blog carnival, but I hope my pursuit of prizes will assist in raising more awareness and interest in this project.

Thank You for the reading. It is the last part of a triptitch of articles about an innovation for fund-raising against diseases that I’ve been trying to get built. Sometimes it seems that those that browse our blogs do so as spectators of an accident… they look, but soon just move on.
Unfortunately, I think it is true for HIV/AIDS in particular. Now that we have at least treatment for those with health care, AIDS is seen as a problem solved or just a problem that afflicts a disposable population. We have made tremendous progress, I know longer attend a funeral every two weeks. But some of the people that I love best, are still living with this disease. I hope that this bring it to the forefront with some lingering impact.
