WordPress Woes: 2.7.1 upgrade glitches

The new WordPress automatic upgrade feature is fantastic, when it works. WordPress 2.7.1 was released yesterday and brought with it the biggest real life test of the new upgrade feature.

While you can find lots of people that are raving about easy it was to upgrade to 2.7.1, there are those of us that were shaking our fists in the air and pulling out hair! If you were getting an epic FAIL error message, check out the these troubleshooting tips for the WP 2.7.1 upgrade.

On four out of five blogs, I was getting

Could not copy file: /public_html/wp-content/upgrade/core/wordpress/wp-trackback.php

Installation Failed

I had to change the permission on the upgrade folder to 777. Then, I rerun the automatic upgrade under the Tools menu. Immediately after the successful upgrade, I reverted the permission to 755 on the upgrade folder. Once I knew the problem, the upgrades were easy to implement.

Hey, might you have any idea why my wordpress auto upgrade stops at “unpacking the core update” then nothing happens. It satys on at step indefinitely. What a pain in the butt!

If you have a FTP like FileZilla, check the contents of the wp-content>upgrade directory. Is the core folder there? Does it have anything in that core directory?

Hi. Neither WPAU or update manually (by upload via CPanel) in my blog, don’t work. I’ve changed to 777. Still don’t work.

And I checked, there isn’t any file in “wp-content/upgrade” directory. It’s frustrating. What should I do?

    Thanks.

If all else fails, delete or rename the “upgrade” folder inside the wp-content folder. Then do your regular automatic upgrade. This is what I did and it worked.

It is also easy to backup and transfer all your websites from one server to another server if you have cPanel installed-:.
